ZINC RICH ANODE EPOXY PRIMER – 2024 RECIPE
Rustbuster’s Zinc Rich Epoxy-Anode Primer offers the very best in cathodic and barrier protection to steel blast cleaned or power tool cleaned to St3 standard (read our article on surface preparation standards here). Once applied, it forms part of a paint system with our EM121 or Custom 421 epoxy paints or other high-performance coatings.
Epoxy-Anode is a self-repairing primer containing 93% zinc solids bound into an epoxy resin. If a scratch goes through the topcoat and primer back to bare metal, the zinc in the primer will react with the steel. This reaction will form zinc salts that will heal the scratch and maintain the barrier to prevent rusting. This is known as cathodic protection; an established way to control corrosion.

Product description | 2 pack isocyanate-free epoxy zinc-rich primer. |
Pack description | A 1.25 ltr pack includes 850ml of base, 150ml of hardener and 250 ml of thinner.
A 6 ltr pack includes 4.25 ltr of base, 0.75 ltr of hardener and 1 ltr of thinner. |
Mix ratio | Mix 8.5 parts component A (zinc) to 1.5 part component B (hardener) by volume. |
Coverage | Can be applied to steel as low as 5c. The steel must be at least 3 degrees above the current dew point. (See our dew point calculator.) |
Thinning | Use only the epoxy thinner supplied, from 5 to 20% max. |
Application | Brush or spray on a blast-cleaned surface. |
Spraying | Minimum 1.8mm nozzle or an HB (high build) primer set up. Test atomisation on a test panel first. Viscosity will vary, i.e. thicker in colder temperatures. Data correct at 20c. |
Pot life | Pot life is the time from mixing the two components to the point at which the mixed paint is no longer usable. For Zinc Rich Epoxy-Anode, you have 2.5 hours of pot life once mixed at 20c – longer at colder temperatures. |
Shelf life | We recommend storing upside down in a dry place at around 20c. In these conditions, the product has a shelf life of 12 months.
Do not store below 20c as this can affect performance. |
Disposal | Allow the mix to cure in your mixing cup and throw it away as dry waste. |
Cleaning | Clean up with standard thinner or gun wash. Do not thin the paint with standard thinner as this will affect the paint cure. |
Safety | Use in a well-ventilated atmosphere. Use a respirator face mask when spraying or brushing in an enclosed space. Please see the MSDS (material safety data sheet) in our data sheet area.
Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye protection. |
