Salt Removing Technology
Salt contamination is inevitable from atmosphere and highway maintenance use CHLOR-X as part of your weekly wash routine.
- Use Chlor-X to wash all steel prior to cleaning
- Use Chlor-X prior to painting steel
- Use Chlor-X in your weekly Car, Bus or Truck wash
- Use Chlor-X to wash electric fences, seaside railings and steel architecture
- Use Chlor-x to flush marine engines
- Use Chlor-X to wash down boats
- Use Chlor-X to wash marine equipment
- Use Chlor-X to clean marine fishing tackle
Dry salt crystals cling so well to the surface of steel that the treatment has to be able to get behind the salt to lift it from the steels surface. Power washing alone cannot do this. A sample coupon of salt contaminated steel boiled for one hour in water will only remove 90% of contaminant salt, it is this hard crystallised salt that requires a special surface surfactant to get behind the crystal and lift it from the surface our formula achieves this at a molecular level not previously available on the UK market. CHLOR-X will also remove salts from concrete and most other substrates.
Why is salt removal so important ?
Salt left untreated within the steels surface pores is like high powered water suction pump literally pulling all the moisture through your paint coating to form the perfect rust cell. It can even do this while your paint is wet. If you don’t treat it your coating will fail.
A tiny salt crystal too small to see left underneath a good quality paint system of primer and topcoat will exert 15,000 psi yes that’s fifteen thousand psi of pressure on the coating to try and pull moisture through. That is enourmous pressure that any paint will give into in time. You just cannot afford not to remove salt from the surface it is literally the worst thing you can do.
An example of a salt contaminated surface
If you use a hydrochloric acid solution to remove rust from the steels surface you will find that the rust is removed back to clean steel very quickly but within a few hours the surface is rusting quicker than before, why? The dried surface salts from the hydrochloric acid (chlorides) are literally sucking water out of the air towards the steels surface creating the perfect rust cell. This is what happens when you know the salts are present the same process occurs when you don’t.
The use of CHLOR-X would prevent this from happening because it gets beneath the surface salts so they are easily removed when neutralising. If you happened to paint over these salt crystals then the salt will actually be sucking water through the paint coating before your paint is even dry. Yes it’s on a molecular level but it is an active rust cell no matter how small. These surface salts not only encourage rust but prevent paint film adhesion you know the scenario a bit of paint bubbling and inside is a load of rust, must have come from the other side of the steel……not really, it’s much more likely to have come from salt on a badly prepared surface.
Remember a salt crystal is an inward sucking water pump operating at 15,000 psi of pressure on your paint film.
CHLOR-X Leaves a measurable salt free surface thats ready to paint or wax over.
Salt contamination is the number one enemy in rust prevention, and it can be prevented by using Rustbuster CHLOR-X
Use Rustbuster CHLOR-X
- Before shot blast or after soda media cleaning.
- After degreasing and before use of surface prep tools.
- In your regular weekly car wash to remove road salts from vehicles used in winter prior to wash and wax
- For general maintenance and rust prevention on plant machinery
- Highway maintenance machinary
- As an engine flush in marine engines and any cleaning in a marine environment.
Application method
Chlor-X can be applied in a direct to surface formulation CHLOR-X DTS, or a hose end 30:1 dispenser that fits directly onto your hozelock type of hose end supplied in a concentrated form CHLOR-X 201. Or a full strength concentration that can be diluted up to 100:1 in power wash steam cleaners or up to 500:1 in Hydrablast units CHLOR-X 100.
As the manufacturers of Chlor-X Rustbuster would be pleased to supply a concentration that suits your requirements.
Testing for salt removal
On the Paint and surface testing section of this web site you will find a simple inexpensive Chloride test kit where you can get a ready indication of salt present on the surface, if you require a measurement you can use this in conjunction with a conductivity metre. For ISO and ASTM standard salt testing equipment we have the international standard Bresle kit for salt measurement.
